Court Sides With School District in

Summary:
The United States Supreme Court issued an opinion today, June 25, 2007, in the well-publicized “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” case, ruling that a school administrator did not violate a student’s First Amendment rights when the student was suspended for unfurling a large banner advocating drug use at a school-sanctioned event. The Court held that schools may take steps to safeguard students from speech that can “reasonably be regarded as encouraging illegal drug use.” As such, the Court found that confiscating a large banner that had a pro-drug message on it and suspending the student were legitimate and legal actions.
