OVER 80 NEW BOARD MEMBERS LAUNCH INAUGURAL NHSBA TRAINING EVENT
5/5/2005

Summary:
This evening, over 80 newly elected school board members from throughout New Hampshire, gathered at the Local Government Center in Concord to engage in learning the basics of how to be an effective school board member. This event is the first in a brand new series of training workshops offered by the New Hampshire School Boards Association. This event, as well as those that will follow, are in direct response to a training needs survey conducted by the Association of all of its member school boards earlier this year. NHSBA President Cindy Chagnon warmly welcomed the new members, and noted that locally elected school board members are the largest body of elected officials in New Hampshire. She encouraged the new members to make the most of their service by actively engaging in not only their local boards, but also in the New Hampshire School Boards Association. The workshop was facilitated by Cindy Hatch, school board member from Gilmanton, and the new NHSBA Training Coordinator. Ms. Hatch actively engaged the audience by using interactive techniques designed to illustrate the critical and appropriate roles that school board members play. Particular emphasis was placed on the policy and "big picture" role of the school board. NHSBA Executive Director Ted Comstock thanked the new members for their attendance, and noted that this was the largest gathering of new school board members in the history of the Association. Dr. Comstock also emphasized that the Association is the professional statewide organization for school boards, and it stands ready to assist all its members in any way possible. This workshop will be repeated on Thursday, May 26, in Littleton at the Learning Center. This workshop will run between 4pm and 7pm. Please call NHSBA at 228-2061 to register.
